Blank SPH vs Plano: Do Not Convert Empty Space Into Zero Power Automatically

A blank SPH field and plano can lead to the same numerical sphere entry only when the blank was intentionally used to mean zero. The document itself must establish that intent. Empty space can also reflect an incomplete record, a cropped scan, an unmeasured field, or a formatting convention that applies somewhere else on the page.

Empty, crossed out, and plano are three different signals

PlanoPL, or an explicit 0.00 communicates zero spherical power when used in the correct SPH field. A crossed-out box may indicate that the field does not apply, was cancelled, or was intentionally left without a value. A truly empty box communicates less; its meaning depends on the form and issuing office.

Do not treat every dash as plano. A short minus sign can be separated from a faint number in a low-quality scan. A long ruled line may be part of the printed form. Handwritten zeroes, the letter O, and PL can also be confused after image compression.

The goal is not to become a handwriting expert. It is to identify whether the issued spectacle prescription explicitly supports a zero-power sphere for that eye.

Trace the row across OD and OS before interpreting it

Start with the row labels. Confirm which line belongs to OD and which to OS, then trace across SPH, CYL, AXIS, prism, ADD, and visual-acuity columns. A value shifted by one column can create an apparently blank sphere and an impossible cylinder or axis pattern.

Check whether the form separates distance and near prescriptions. A blank in one section may be intentional because the complete values appear in another. Conversely, a number in a near row should not be moved into the distance sphere simply because the distance box is blank.

Compare the two eyes only for layout consistency. The other eye cannot supply the missing power. One eye can be plano while the other carries sphere, cylinder, or both.

How repeat prescriptions reveal a formatting convention

Older documents from the same office can show how its software prints explicit zeroes, but they are evidence about formatting—not authority for the current power. If past prescriptions always displayed PL and the new record is simply empty, that difference strengthens the reason to ask for clarification.

Do not copy the old sphere into the new row. A formatting comparison should produce a question such as “Does this blank intentionally mean plano?” rather than a replacement value.

Improve the document before interpreting the mark

Use image quality to determine whether a field is truly empty. View the original file at full size, check another page from the same scan for contrast, and request a fresh export when compression has erased faint handwriting. Do not apply aggressive filters that can create or remove a minus sign.

If photographing a paper copy, place it flat under even light, keep all four corners visible, and avoid flash glare across the grid. Save an untouched image before making a high-contrast duplicate for discussion. The issuing office should still confirm the value; a clearer photograph only makes the question more precise.

A partial screenshot is especially risky when column headings or the OD/OS label are outside the crop. The smallest useful document is the complete prescription page, not the smallest image that shows one blank box.

The risk of filling a required field just to continue checkout

Online order forms often require a selection. Choosing 0.00 can clear an error message even when the prescription is incomplete. That successful click changes neither the source document nor the lab’s need for an exact instruction.

Zero is not a harmless placeholder. It tells the lab to make no spherical correction in that field. If the actual sphere was omitted, the finished lens will not preserve the prescription. If another value was misaligned, the error can affect more than SPH.

Do not move CYL into SPH, convert a visual-acuity fraction, use a contact-lens power, or estimate from old glasses. These fields and products describe different things.

Ask for an explicit zero when the document is ambiguous

Send the full page and describe the field by eye and row:

“The current spectacle prescription dated [date] appears blank in the SPH field for [OD/OS]. Does the blank intentionally mean plano/0.00, or is a value missing? Please provide a complete, legible copy for ordering.”

Request a corrected document or traceable portal record. Avoid accepting a number without patient name, date, eye assignment, and prescriber context, because it can later be attached to the wrong version.

Check how the explicit value reaches the lab

After clarification, use the Manlykicks prescription-entry guide to map the explicit value. If the current interface displays a different convention, send the original record to the Help Center. Only then should prescription glasses be evaluated for fit and supported lens options.

Review the confirmation as a fresh document. Make sure the explicit plano remains attached to SPH for the correct eye and that adjacent CYL or AXIS values have not shifted during manual correction. A screenshot of the input screen is less useful than a structured summary showing how the lab will receive the row.

If support must translate PL into 0.00, ask it to confirm that equivalence in the order record. The customer should not silently perform the translation when the source itself was the disputed item.

Plano is a value. Blank is an absence of visible data. Treat them as equivalent only when the authoritative document or issuing office makes that equivalence explicit.
