A note such as 31/32 suggests two monocular pupillary-distance values, but the slash does not identify which number belongs to the right eye and which belongs to the left. The document’s labels, reading direction, and measurement purpose must establish that map. Facial appearance, number size, or an online form’s visual order cannot safely supply it.
A slash suggests a pair but does not name the eyes
Monocular PD records the distance from the facial center reference to each pupil, producing separate right and left values. A binocular or single PD records the total distance between the pupils. Two smaller numbers separated by a slash often look like a dual PD, but punctuation is not a universal data standard.
The pair may be written right/left, OD/OS, R/L, or in the physical order seen by the examiner. A patient-facing portal may rearrange those values. A lab order can also place the wearer’s right eye on the viewer’s left side of the screen, mimicking how a person is seen face-to-face.
Do not add the values merely to make a single PD unless the retailer specifically requires a verified binocular total and the source has been confirmed as monocular PD. Do not divide a single PD in half to recreate a pair; real faces are not assumed to be perfectly symmetrical.
Use document order and labels, never facial assumptions
Begin with the original uncropped page. Look for OD, OS, R, L, right, left, monocular, distance PD, or a printed diagram. If the values sit under two columns, trace each column to its label rather than reading the slash in isolation.
Check the page orientation. A rotated phone image can reverse the apparent relationship between labels and values. Confirm that a selfie or mirrored webcam image was not used as the labeling reference. The person’s visible nose position is not a substitute for the measurement record.
If the document shows only 31/32 with no legend, ask the measuring office which convention it used. A one-millimeter difference cannot reveal the eyes; either eye can carry the larger value.
Near and distance notation can create a second pair
Some records include distance PD and near PD. Near values are generally smaller because the eyes converge for a close target, but that relationship should be identified by labels—not used to reverse-engineer an ambiguous record. Occupational measurements can also be tied to a defined working distance.
A document might therefore contain two slash-separated pairs. One pair can represent distance right/left and the other near right/left. Treating the second line as a repeated measurement, or combining one value from each line, would create an unsupported order.

Online forms reverse the visual order surprisingly often
An online form can list OD first, place left eye on the left side of the screen, or show two boxes without strong labels. Read each field name rather than matching screen position to document position.
Enter one eye at a time and then read the confirmation aloud: “right PD [value], left PD [value].” Take a screenshot of the final structured summary, not only the input boxes. If the confirmation collapses dual PD into one number or swaps the visual order, stop and ask support how the lab receives the data.

Use totals only as an error check, not an eye assignment
Adding two confirmed monocular values can help detect a typing error when the source also provides a verified binocular PD. The sum cannot reveal which number belongs to which eye. 31 + 32 and 32 + 31 produce the same total while placing the optical centers differently.
Likewise, a total that differs slightly from an older measurement does not tell the customer which record is wrong. Measurement method, fixation distance, rounding, frame use, and transcription can contribute. Ask the measuring professional to identify the current values and intended task rather than choosing the pair with the neater sum.
Confirm the final left-right map before submission
When labels are absent, send a focused request:
“My record shows PD as [value]/[value] without clear right-left labels. Please confirm which value belongs to OD/right and which belongs to OS/left, and whether the pair is for distance, near, or another working range.”
Preserve the reply with the measurement source. If the retailer requires a format the record does not provide, use the Help Center rather than estimating. A new measurement may be more appropriate when the source is old, unlabeled, or tied to another frame or task.
Verify the same eye map in three places
After entry, compare three views: the original labeled record, the input form, and the final confirmation. The same eye order should survive all three. If the interface rearranges fields between desktop and mobile layouts, rely on labels rather than left-to-right position.
Keep near and distance pairs visibly named in saved records. A future reorder should not depend on remembering which slash pair belonged to which viewing range.
Once right, left, and intended range are clear, prescription glasses can be assessed by frame dimensions and supported lens design. The frame decision comes after the eye mapping, because a stylish choice cannot compensate for reversed centration data.
The slash tells you to investigate a pair. Only explicit labels tell you how that pair should enter the order.
