A clean lower rim sits clear at rest. During a normal smile, the right cheek reaches it first and the frame front rises slightly. That visible lift is more useful than the general complaint “these glasses are too big.” It identifies a motion-triggered contact point and a side.
Read brush, pressure, and lift as different signals
A brief brush may leave a smudge without changing the frame. Sustained pressure can leave a mark. Lift moves the bridge and lenses, sometimes only on one side. Record which occurs; do not group them as contact.
Check the same expression twice with the frame naturally placed. Do not exaggerate the smile or push the frame high. Photograph from the side at eye level if the movement is repeatable.
Depth is only one competing cause
A deep lower rim can occupy more cheek space. A bridge that seats low can bring even a shallow frame into contact. Pantoscopic tilt and wrap change how the lower edge approaches the face. Tight temples can pull the front backward. One-sided frame twist can expose only one cheek.
Printed lens height can support comparison but cannot calculate soft-tissue clearance. The interaction must be observed on-face.
Four-view evidence
Capture front at rest, both side views at rest, and the side where contact occurs during a normal smile. Repeat after looking down and walking. Record whether the bridge slides before the smile.
Use a known comfortable pair as a reference. Compare bridge seat, lower-rim depth, tilt, and temple pull. Different prescriptions or designs mean the old pair is not a specification.
Clean frame and skin contact points compatibly and repeat once. A disappearing smudge can be contamination; repeated physical lift remains geometry evidence.
Read the Cheek Clearance Pattern Before Adjusting
Begin with the pattern, not the tool kit. Put the glasses on as you normally wear them and look straight ahead with your face relaxed. Notice whether the lower rims already touch the cheeks, hover just above them, or sit well clear. Then smile naturally rather than forcing the widest possible expression. A frame that remains clear during an ordinary smile is behaving differently from one that is lifted several millimeters every time the cheeks rise.
Four Views That Expose the Geometry
A front-facing mirror shows whether the frame rises when you smile, but it does not show why. Use four views to build a more reliable picture.
First, take a relaxed front view. Check whether the frame is level and whether the pupils sit in broadly comparable positions within the lenses. You are not diagnosing optical centering at home; you are looking for obvious asymmetry. If one lower rim begins closer to the cheek at rest, that side will usually make contact first.
These views are more useful than a tabletop test. A table can reveal gross frame twist, but it cannot reproduce your nose shape, ear height, cheek movement, or the way the temples load the frame on your head.
Bridge Tilt Depth and Temple Force
The bridge controls height and where the frame rests. On a frame with adjustable nose pads, pad spacing and angle can change the position slightly. On a molded plastic bridge, the basic contact shape is built into the frame and has much less adjustment range. If the bridge is too wide or does not share the load evenly, the frame may settle lower than expected.
Home Checks That Preserve the Frame
Safe home work should stay reversible. Clean the bridge, nose pads, temple tips, and lower frame edge with a method appropriate for the materials. Skin oil can make a stable frame slide, while residue on the lower lens can make occasional cheek contact appear constant. Dry everything fully and repeat the four-view test.
Next, compare the new pair with an older pair that fits well. Place both on a clean surface and compare overall front width, lens depth, bridge position, and where the temple curves begin. Do not assume the printed size numbers tell the complete story. Two frames with the same lens and bridge numbers can differ in end-piece width, curvature, bridge shape, and total front width.
Choose Between Adjustment and a Different Frame
A fitter can work faster when you describe the movement precisely. Bring the glasses, the case, and an older pair that sits well. Show the relaxed front view, side view, and smile sequence. Explain whether contact occurs under both lenses or one, whether the frame lifts, and whether it returns to the same position. Mention lash contact, sliding, pressure behind the ears, or one-sided marks because those clues reveal the rest of the geometry.

What the contact does not prove
It does not prove the frame is too wide, too narrow, or the wearer needs a named “face shape” category. It does not authorize moving nose pads or heating a molded bridge. It cannot explain eye symptoms or skin reactions.
If contact occurs without smiling, lashes also touch, one lens sits closer, hardware is loose, or the frame is visibly twisted, broaden the fitting review. Persistent skin or eye symptoms need appropriate care.
Safe decision threshold
A frame may be acceptable when a minor brush does not move it, cause discomfort, contaminate the viewing area repeatedly, or disrupt optical position—and a fitter agrees. It needs adjustment when a safe material-compatible change can preserve stable bridge support while creating dynamic clearance.
Choose another frame when the only cheek-free position is unstable, too low/high, painful, or optically unsuitable. Do not tighten temples to hold the frame away from moving cheeks.
Fitter handoff
Bring the side-specific motion photos, time before contact, dry/clean retest, known pair, and exact activity. Ask the fitter to evaluate bridge seating, lower-rim depth, tilt, wrap, temples, frame level, and lens-to-eye position together.

The observation that changes ownership is actual frame lift. Once a smile moves the lenses from their stable position, the issue belongs to professional fit or frame selection rather than cleaning.
Makeup, skin products, and seasonal variation
Foundation transfer on the lower rim can confirm contact, but absence of a mark does not prove clearance. Sunscreen, moisturizer, heat, and humidity can change friction and cause a frame to settle differently during the day. Record these conditions instead of treating them as the diagnosis.
Run the smile sequence once on clean, dry skin and once under the normal conditions in which the problem appears. Do not remove medically needed skin products for prolonged testing. If contact occurs only after the frame slides, bridge stability may be the upstream issue; if it occurs immediately from a stable position, lower-rim depth, tilt, wrap, or individual facial geometry deserves more attention. That distinction gives the fitter a useful order of events.
